Baja Struggles Following Easter Sunday Earthquake
On April 4, 2010—Easter Sunday—an earthquake measuring 7.2 struck Baja California, Mexico, near Mexicali. Neither as deadly as the Haiti earthquake that occurred in January nor as large as the Chilean quake in February, the Baja earthquake received comparatively little notice. Over 10,000 aftershocks, including a 5.7 tremor that delayed the Padres game against the Toronto Blue Jays, have occurred.
Tim Long, International Ministries missionary, teaches at the Dios con Nosotros seminary in Mexicali and works closely with the churches and pastors of the Baja Baptist Convention. Tim reports that thousands of homes, in some cases entire villages, have been condemned and are uninhabitable. Families aren’t permitted to make repairs, so they are living in tents.
The Mexicali Valley is a major agricultural area, growing food for both Mexican and US consumers. Most of the valley is reclaimed desert, relying on canals and water lines to irrigate the crops. Much of this infrastructure has been destroyed making it impossible to grow crops, putting thousands out of work.
Basic food and provisions are needed for thousands of families. At the Mexicali seminary, three seminarians—Evaristo, Rafael, and Roberto—fill bags with basic provisions that will last a family of six for a week, distributing the bags to the neediest people in the area. They have supplied over 100 families, but more families need assistance.
On the US side of the border, the Primera Iglesia Bautista in Calexico sustained damage that must be repaired.
Please help these brothers and sisters in Christ in their need. Churches may send assistance on the Transformation Ministries Financial Support Form designating Line E2 for the Easter earthquake. Individuals may send gifts directly to Transformation Ministries, 970 S Village Oaks Drive, Suite 101, Covina, CA 91724. Remember to mark your gift Easter earthquake. 100% of all gifts will aid earthquake victims to meet their most basic needs—food, shelter, clothing, water, and sanitation.
